It was confirmed late on Sunday night  (15 August 2021) that Afghanistan Government led by president Ashraf Ghani has fallen and the Taliban has taken control.

And Ashraf Ghani, now a former president, has fled Kabul along with dozen senior officials who are still loyal to him.

Reports however are not clear as to where the former Afghan president has taken refuge. Is it Tajikistan or Uzbekistan. (Al Jazerra reported that Ashraf Ghani has landed in Tashkent, Uzbekistan along with his family).

Taliban has effectively taken control of the presidential palace in Kabul.

It appears that Taliban did not encountered any recognizable resistance to over run Afghanistan.

The former US base at Bagram, near Kabul, was also captured by Taliban.

The speed at which Taliban achieved total occupation of Afghanistan had stunned the United States and everybody else.

The US President Joe Biden sanctioned  total of 5000 US troops to assist the complete withdrawal of American military presence in Afghanistan by 31 August.
